Ten Years Ago - June 2016

I think the Forgotten Heroes challenge may still be running, but it certainly was ten years ago when I did this post. The aim of it was to produce a figure for a superhero (or similar character) that was forgotten or obscure and who didn't currently have a suitable miniature. Obviously Heroclix accounted for a lot of characters, but there were gaps. I did one for public domain character Jenny Everywhere and for Captain Britain's arch nemesis Slaymaster. But this post focuses on  my entry from ten years ago - Captain UK. Rather than one link, there are several, as I detailed each step in the processing of converting a spare Catwoman Heroclix figure into the excellent Captain.

As promised - lots of links:

Ten Years Ago - May 2016

I was spoiled for choice this month, with a couple of things from ten years ago that I thought worth highlighting. However I'm going to save at least one of them for next month when there are June 206 posts that cover it better.

I thought that for this month I'd cover a game of HOTT, since that's what the blog was originally all about. But it's HOTT with a difference, since it's a game featuring two of my Epic 40K armies rather than 'conventional' fantasy forces. HOTT works pretty well for these armies if you aren't fussed about detail and I've had some great games over the years.

In this battle a chapter of Space Marines fights against a Chaos army.

Ten Years Ago - March 2016

Over the years our club has been involved in playtesting rules, mostly by Sam Mustafa. It's an interesting process and often good fun.

Playtesting is often secret at first, and this post from ten years ago was our first go with a new set of WW2 rules. They eventually became Rommel, but were very different in their original form.

Ten Years Ago - February 2016

Ten years ago I got a 3D printer. They seem to be ubiquitous now - a few members of our club seem to have ones that are running full-time turning out terrain and armies - but back then they were pretty new. I had about a year's worth of fun out of it before running it simply became a chore. I understand they are more reliable now, but mine was constantly in need of having the nozzle unblocked or the bed recalibrated.

Anyway, after a couple of years I needed the space it occupied for something else and it went into storage. I got rid of it when we moved house a coupe of years ago.

But this month's time-machine takes us back to the time I first got it.

Ten Years Ago - January 2016

I haven't done any giant monster gaming for a while now. I think I kind of fell out of love with all three of the rules I used for it, and haven't managed to convince myself to go back to one of them and remind myself what I liked about them. I even looked at writing my own, but never got very far with it.

Anyway, my first nostalgia post for 2026 looks at this game of Giant Monster Rampage from 2016.  Maybe it will inspire me to get one of my set of rules out and smash up a few skyscrapers.

Ten Years Ago - December 2015

Something historical for this month's Ten Year time-machine post. Back in December 2015 we played a big DBA game recreating the battle of Chaeronea, using some lovely 15mm figures.

Here's the post:

Ten Years Ago - November 2015

Deciding on a post to showcase from November 2015 was pretty easy. For a start I didn't make that many posts. And the best one related to our first camping road-trip when we spent two weeks travelling across New South Wales and back again. We went with friends who had a lot more experience of such trips. A good job as a few things went wrong that needed their help. But it was a great adventure, and we've done a couple more such trips since then.

Anyway, in the far west of New South Wales we stayed in Silverton, and in Silverton they have the world's only Mad Max II Museum. So we went there.

We really should head back out that way again.

Ten Years Ago - October 2015

October is MOAB month, probably the second biggest wargames convention in Australia. I usually try to pop up for one or two days, and used to play in the HOTT competition (back when there was one).

So for this months nostalgic look at what I was up to ten years ago let's head off to MOAB 2015. I spent the day playing two games that used to be mainstays of this blog, but which you don't see any more: Munera Sine Missione and Machinas.

Anyway, let's relive the fun of a Saturday spent at MOAB 2015

Ten Years Ago - September 2015

Continuing my new monthly resurrection of a post from ten years ago.

I'm not sure why I suddenly decided that I needed to wargame the English Civil War using One Hour Wargames, but I did. And because I wanted to do it as soon as possible I put together some armies using paper figures from Junior General.

I did a few posts in September 2015 showing how I assembled the armies themselves, but I highlighted a 'make' last month. So I thought I'd take you back to their first game. It's one of the One Hour Wargames scenarios rebadged as the first action in a mini-campaign set in the county of Midsomer.

So let's go back to 1642, and the  Battle of Midsomer Barrow

Since that outing those paper figures have seen many more battles and have fought under at least five different sets of rules!

Ten Years Ago - August 2015

This blog has been around for over 13 years now and has, I think, seen a fair amount of activity compared to many. The other day I was idly looking through old posts and sometimes came across things that I didn't even remember posting.

So I thought that it would be fun to resurrect an old post each month, and I have decided to go back ten years to do it. Hopefully it will allow me to revisit forgotten projects and maybe introduce you to things you haven't seen before.

So as we begin August 2025, let's have a look at something I was up to ten years ago.

Oddly enough I was playing a lot of games with my Risk-figure Great Northern War armies, mostly using a variant of the rules in One Hour Wargames. I was also working through my horribly stalled project to play all of the One Hour Wargames scenarios in order. And I was coming to the point where I was going to play the Fortified Defence scenario, which needed some forts.

So I built a couple of redoubts.

This is the final post, that shows the finished products. There's three posts in August 2015 that show the build process, step by step.

So hop in your time machine and read In Which I Make A Redoubt - Part 4

I've barely used the redoubts since I made them. That needs to change, I reckon.

And here's the whole of August 2015
