Fast And Furious

I don't have any chariot models bigger than 6mm, but I do have a lot of post-apocalypse cars, so for a game of Faustus Furius with different 'chariot' types I used those instead. Bigger models meant a bigger track as well.

From top to bottom:

Fantastic Cat (Agile)
Welcome To The Machine (Heavy)
Black Dog (Fast)
Please Don't Touch (Scythed)
Bad Blood (Archer)

I used the Roman Chariot Race option for three failures - a Loss Of Control roll instead of a track invasion.

The race was two runs around the track. The starting line was wide, whilst the finish was tighter.

The start was fairly predictable - Fantastic Cat managed to pull ahead of most of the pack, some of whom had to swerve to avoid each other. And Black Dog got out in front very quickly with its greater speed.

Black Dog doesn't steer very well though, went out of control and crashed.

The other vehicles rounded the first bend. Fantastic Cat did this with ease, being agile. Bad Blood tried to follow and get in a long-range shot, but couldn't quite get the activations.

Black Dog recovered from its crash fairly quickly and sped back into second place.

Bad Blood collided, purely by accident in this case ...

... and both vehicles spun to a halt. Welcome To The Machine was having some difficulty staying in control as well.

Black Dog recovered quickly again, and was soon pressing Fantastic Cat closely as they took the second turn and headed into the second lap.

But Fantastic Cat's agility kept it nicely on track, whilst Black Dog blundered on the turn. Welome To The Machine was making a strong attempt to get back into the running as well.

I say that. It disappeared from this shot, blundering about on the fringes of the track somewhere.

Fantastic Cat was now well ahead - agile chariots seem to be very good under these rules, since they can do a sharp turn for one action instead of two.

Black Dog and Bad Blood battled for second place. Please Don't Touch was having a terrible race, and stayed firmly in last place.

I can't remember exactly what happened here - someone attacked someone else and there was a chain-reaction of collisions and skids. They saw Bad Blood crash and Welcome To The Machine skid to a halt.

Meanwhile Fantastic Cat was about to lap Please Don't Touch who, not unreasonably, attacked the leader, causing it to veer off away from the bend.

Despite this, Fantastic Cat looked good to finish well ahead.

A smartly executed turn saw it take the final bend. Black Dog was, once again, having issues with cornering, whilst Welcome To The Machine was in a distant second place.

A win for Fantastic Cat, who held the lead for the whole race.

I kept the race going, looking for the second-place.

There was chaos on the back straight as vehicles shot at or tried to avoid each other. Black Dog crashed again.

Bad Blood had to drive wide to avoid the wreckage, and this gave Welcome To The Machine a chance to get ahead.

It took the turn slowly and, amazingly, found itself now being pursued by Please Don't Touch, who had had a blinding run down the back straight.

A final turn saw Welcome To The Machine take second place, with Please Don't Touch a close third.

It's hard to say at this stage how the balance of the different types plays out, but, as I wrote above, the agile trait does seem to be particularly good. Maybe other vehicles need to be more aggressive early on in order to prevent the agile ones getting too far ahead. And possibly longer straights would offset some of its advantages, allowing faster vehicles a chance to shine.

I have a few thoughts on how to better play these types of cars in the game, whils still maintaining the game's flavour, and will try them out in the next week.
