Always pop into your local toyshop on a regular basis, because eventually you find something you're looking for. Since I started converting vehicles for Machinas I've wated a Volkswagen bus or camper-van, because I can think of few iconic vehicles less likely to make an awesome post-apocalypse racing vehicle. Today I found one:
It's not quite a stubby little camper-van I really wanted, but it will do.
At this stage it's not a threatening prospect. Now I need to decide how to tool it up. At the moment I feel a flamethrower coming on, but we'll see. It wil need a name, and a new paint-job as well.
Here it is with another vehicle waiting to be processed - a Hot Wheels 1950s car of some sort. I'm not very good at identifying cars.
I'll have to look one of these up; it's got zombie apocalypse/Middle-East-aid-worker-in-trouble scenario written all over it ;)
ReplyDeleteI can help! That's a 1957 Cadillac.
ReplyDeleteIt is indeed. I just couldn't read the underside when I took the photo (old eyes, no glasses :) ). Thanks.
DeleteBroadside is a possibility (as a visual only; it's not really covered by Machinas), but there's a part of my brain that still finds Hippy VW Bus + Gigantic Flamethrower a very attractive combination.
ReplyDeleteIt should be called 'Passage to Bangkok'.
ReplyDeleteNot a bad idea. I am trying to come up with sources for names that aren't Rush songs, but it's certainly a contender now.
ReplyDeleteBut you have to stick to the theme.
ReplyDeleteYears ago I ran a short Traveller campaign. All the ships were named from Rush songs. My personal favourite was the pirate ship 'Something For Nothing'
My cars are still all named for songs. I just widened the criteria, as I'd always planned to do. Currently they are:
DeleteDreamline
Miss Murder
Pigs On The Wing
The Devil Went Down To Georgia
The Anarchist
A Farewell To Kings
Nobody's Hero
A Farewell To Kings
Mary Jane's Last Dance
Hand Over Fist
Red Barchetta
Clockwork Angel
The Fountain Of Lamneth
Tom Sawyer
War Pig
Villain Of Science
Lola
I just got out of the basement. Found the stash of old Hot Wheels, Match Box cars. I have a WHOLE bunch of NASCAR cars. I like the idea of using them but maybe they would be too similar? At the right price however...
ReplyDeleteDo you use Stan's stuff for you conversions?
Do see why a car mod could add to the bash modifier if you added something to the side doors.
I haven't used any of Stan's stuff yet - just scratchbuilds and things from my bits box.
DeleteWhat type of paint do you use? I picked up a couple more cares for $0.84 and with the ones I have, it makes a total of 8. Looking through my bits now for guns and stuff. Could you post a blog on making the cars? I am truly inspired now. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI just use my regular acrylics that I use for model soldiers. I do lightly sand the cars first with very fine sandpaper just to roughen the surface, and I also spray them with an undercoat of matt varnish first before putting the paint undercoat on - helps it stick. I'm going to look at keeping the original paintwork on some though, with a few touch-ups.
