Gathol vs Green Martians

Neither Gathol nor the Green Martian got any table-time the other week when I last had my Barsoom armies out, so I gave them a go last night.

Gathol defended, but the Green Martians set themselves up on a nice range of hills and waited.

Gathol advanced cautiously, with a plan in mind.

The riders on their left charged the Green Martians on the hill. There was no way they were going to win, but assuming that they rolled well enough to not be destroyed the Green Martians would pursue off the hill and that flank could be defeated in detail.

Meanwhile the rest of Gathol's army closed up to prevent the remaining Green Martians moving up in support. The Gatholian flyer moved into the enemy rear.

The plan worked; Gathol's riders fell back and the Green Martians followed.

The Green Martian response was to abandon the hill and simply charge all down the line.

Gathol lost some riders on their flank, but the Green Martians were being accosted by the flyer and lost an element themselves.

Unfortunately in the centre the Green Martian jeddak rode down Gathol's jeddak, and that was it for Gathol.

With another blade lost in the same bound Gathol had lost 6AP and their general, whilst the Green Martians had lost a mere 2AP

I couldn't be bothered setting up another game (I've been ill, we're in the middle of a heatwave and was getting tired) so I kept playing.

The Green Martians kept up the pressure with Gathol now having difficulties reacting, especially with their aerial elements. But, surprisingly, Gathol got it together in the centre and managed to take out another elements of Green Martian knights.

Gathol's airboats had slowly been pushed back my Green Martian riflemen. whilst in the centre the Green Martian jeddak and an accompanying element were making a ride for Gathol's stronghold. Gathol got enough PIPs to turn and airboat and prevent this.

Unfortunately this led to the other airboat being destroyed when it couldn't recoil from shooting.

And now the second airboat was in trouble ...

... until the flyer came in to help and the Green Martian jeddak was slain.

Losses elsewhere now saw the Green Martian on 10AP lost, whilst Gathol; was on 11AP. So things were going to be close.

But the Green Martian shooters were able to move up and take down the second Gathol airboat, to give them the win (again).

The game did inspire me to dig out my second (unpainted) Green Martian army and adding it to my painting pile. The trick will be making them look different enough from the other army, without diverting from the proper colour-schemes.

  1. Great game, Kaptain πŸ‘πŸΌπŸ‘πŸΌ. Thought the Gathol army did well to put up a strong fight on ‘half PIPs’ after their first loss.
Couple of quick Q.’s: Are these Peter Pig figures?…and..What’s the source for the stronghold? Is it a historical building / souvenir model, or a specific Sci-Fi casting?

    1. The Green Martians are Peter Pig, but the Red Martians are mostly from Black Hat's martian Empires range, which are much nicer Red Martians than Peter Pig's offering. Their Green Martians are lovely too, but too big for HOTT elements.

As for the Stronghold, it's a model of a shopping mall in the UAE. Part of a series of resin buildings that the airline Emirates did many years ago. I picked up three in a car-boot sale in Staines many, many years ago - lots of airline goodies up for grabs in that area, for obvious reasons. I got that mall, a 1/100th scale watch-tower (which sees occasional use as a stronghold, and a 1/300 scale desert fort which looks great but still hasn't seen table time.

Maybe I should do a post showcasing them. The mall gets used a stronghold for various armies and you will also see it feature in a few of my giant monster games as well.

    2. Thanks for that, Kaptain…and neat shopping mall!! Great find πŸ‘πŸΌ. (I have a few of those ‘Emirates Airways’ souvenir forts, picked up at a charity shop, for DBA forts and Hott strongholds…best £1 each ever spent! 😁). A showcase post would be good ✔️
