The Dwarves were still out from Week 11 of HOTT 52, so I decided to use them again. They were defending what appeared to be a strong position against ...
... Wildlings from the North.
The Wildlings planned to use their warbands to pile straight into the Dwarf centre. A group of riders were sent around the flank to pin the Dwarves covering that approach and stop them reinforcing. The Dwarves responded by sending their helicopter into the attack.
The helicopter was forced back, but ended up disrupting the main Wildling attack as it did so. The Wildlings continued their advance, whilst the Dwarves shuffled troops around in response.
The flaw in the Dwarven defence soon became apparent (even as a solo-gamer you can outwit yourself). They were facing an army that's good in bad going by anchoring their flank on ... bad going.
The Wildlings attacked through the thickets on the Dwarven left. The Dwarves held back the main attack with their cannon.
The Dwarves organised a defence-line in and around the thickets, but the Wildlings were already outflanking their units in the centre.
Shapeshifters harassed the steam-tank, but were scattered. The Dwarves' tunneling-machine pinned some archers coming up in support.
Led by their general, the Wildlings attacked in the centre.
The riders were forced back by the artillery, but the first line of Dwarven blades fell to the Wildling charge. The Dwarf King moved up to take their place.
He mounted an epic defence, holding the Wildlings to a draw or even forcing them back, again and again.
The artillery was finally swept away, but more blades were moving up to fill the gap. The helicopter was finaly moving back into the action as well; it had been isolated and starved of PIPs since its intial sorties.
The wildlings now controlled the thickets, but the mighty behemoths of both armies were fighting to the side. As ever this simply became a shoving match and had no further impact on the battle.
The Dwarf King destroyed the warbands facing him, but as more came up to his front, some attacked out of the thickets on his left.
In a surprise result they killed the King and his bodyguard. The Dwarf army broke.
The Dwarves lost 9AP, including their general (two blades,a shooter and the artillery). The Wildlings lost 6AP (the shapeshifters and a couple of warband).
I really enjoy seeing these weekly battles. Keeps me motivated to get my table and figures done. Best regards.
ReplyDeleteGreat looking armies. I must do some HOTT, haven't played a game for years.
