HOTT 52 - Week 23 - Jahar vs Gathol

This week's HOTT 52 game is sequel to Tuesday evening's Dragon Rampant game - having won the crystal for their city, Gathol must now defend it against an all-out attack by the armies of Jahar.

The city of Gathol (yes it is, despite appearances), and its army draw up on each side, owing to a large area of rocky ground right in front of it (counted as woods).

On Gathol's right were some warriors and three elements of the city's famed thoat-riders.

On the left the general led more warriors, supported by the city's aerial navy.

Jahar massed for an attack on Gathol's right, with their foot supported by the bulk of their flyers. Phor Tak and his awesome weapons were deployed on a hill in support.

Gathol's left was to be screened by hordes of expendable cannibals from the outlying provinces of Jahar.

Jahar advanced rapidly, whilst the army of Gathol seemed to be content to simply watch. However their general, seeing the danger to his right, moved to swing his command over to that side of the field.

The cannibals advanced to prevent the move.

Gathol's navy, well away from where the focus of the battle would be, also moved to cross the field, but ran into the cannibals first, destroying the first group they came across.

Jahar was advancing quickly towards Gathol's right. The plan was for the foot to charge in whilst the aerials swept overhead to block retreats.

It was a sound plan, and would have worked had Jahar not suffered two to three bounds of almost total command paralysis, just as they reached Gathol's line.

Gathol's commander, and one other element of warriors, had evaded the cannibals and Phor Tak's disintegrator ray, and reached the flank of Jahar's now stationary assault, pinning the large flyer there.

It was Gathol who attacked, safe in the knowledge that the large flyer was now limited in its ability to move. Jahar's commander was sandwiched between two groups of foes.

He fought back, and destroyed the Gatholian warriors opposing him.

Jahar counter-attacked, with flyers and warriors attacking the thoat-riders.

One element of riders was destroyed, but poor timing of combats on Jahar's part saw their small flyers unable to recoil from a losing combat and destroyed as well.

Jahar's commander came under attack again, falling back towards the battle against the riders.

Soon there was no room left to retreat, and the commander went down fighting.

Jahar lost a couple of elements of cannibals, a flyer and their commander. Gathol lost an element of warriors and some thoat-riders.

Gathol's navy never really got a chance to get into the fight, whilst Phor Tak fired ineffectually at an element of Gatholian warriors for most of the game.

Gathol - proud, defiant and not to be mistaken for any other city at all.

The game was dominated by a patch of wood-style bad going in the middle that split both forces in half, and also terrible PIP rolls by both sides who couldn't command their widely-spread forces properly, especially the aerials. This messed up things for both armies but, critically, for Jahar when they were ready to launch their attack. By the time they got the PIPs to do this, Gathol had brought over reinforcements to block the movement of their airboat.

And the lists you say?

Gathol

5 x Blades (including the general)
3 x Riders
2 x Airboats
1 x Flyer

Jahar

4 x Blades (including the general)
2 x Airboats
1 x Flyer
5 x Hordes (Cannibals)
1 x Artillery (The scientist Phor Tak)
