HOTT 52 - Week 33 - Union vs Confederate

Nine years ago I played a game of HOTT using my 6mm ACW armies, which I then posted about on this blog HERE. I thought that it would be fun to get them out again for my HOTT 52 project.

Once again I went for the approach of running the two sides as fantasy nations - the ordered, technological Union against the older, more chaotic and individualistic Confederacy. The armies were sabot-based onto 40mm frontages.

The Union attacked and consisted of:

Spear General @ 2AP
3 x Spears @ 2AP (Regular Troops)
2 x Shooters @ 2AP (Soldiers with Repeaters)
2 x Artillery @ 3AP (Cannon)
2 x Riders @ 2AP (Cavalry)
1 x Warband @ 2AP (Zouaves)

The defending Confederates consisted of:

1 x Magician @ 4AP (Wise Old General)
1 x Hero (Heroic General)
2 x Knights (Cavalry)
4 x Warband (Infantry)
1 x Artillery (Cannon)
1 x Lurker (Guerillas)


The Confederates.


The Union.

The game lok set for a Union advance and a Confederate defence, but with the Union having tons of missile troops it was obviously that they could close p on he Confederates, bast them and wait for them to attack. So the Confederates went for a pre-emptive strike, looking to take out the shooters on the Union right.


As the Confederates advanced they reorganised their line.


The Union advanced their cavalry on their left, whilst the zouaves moved out to slow the Confederate centre.


The Union artillery pinned down the Confederate centre.


The Confederate hero led. the attack on the Union right, but it was drive back.


The Union zouaves fought in the centre.


The Union cavalry came under fire from artillery, and some were destroyed.


The survivors veered away and supported the zouaves, destroying some Confederate troops. 


The Union right held off the first Confederate attacks, their accurate shooting taking out more Confederate infantry.


However the surviving Union cavalry found itself trapped and was destroyed.


The Confederate cavalry turned the Union right, destroying the troops there.


The Union shooters fell back, refusing the flank.


The Confederates charged, but the shooters held ...


... and then flanked the hero, killing him.


This left the Confederate cavalry facing the shooters. They charged, but again the shooters held, before diving off the cavalry.



The Confederate general attacked the Union artillery directly


He was driven back as some of the Confederate cavalry was destroyed.


The Confederate general charged again, and this time destroyed the artillery. The Union were now down 9AP.


But the last Confederate cavalry element was driven off the table, and that broke them.


Both sides were reorganising lines in the centre.

This was an interesting change of pace from traditional fantasy HOTT games. Once again it didn't feel like an ACW battle, but then it wasn't supposed to.

  1. A good idea supported by a great commentary! Because of the close range at which the war was mostly fought spears and warband designations seem appropriate.

  2. considering the quick-kills I expected an easy Rebel victory. From your commentary I get the impression the Union rolled much better.
