Maurice

I had a game of HOTT scheduled yesterday, but it fell through, so I simply spectated Caesar and Ralph's Maurice game. Cesar was using a no-frills Austrian army, whilst Ralph had some nippy fast-shooting Prussians.

Caesar defended, and the objective was a small village on his right flank. Ralph stacked his entire army against that flank, with the rest of the table being covered by a cavalry screen.

Then it was just a matter of a headlong assault on the Austrian army.

Caesar swung onto Ralph's exposed flank, but had to pass through fields to do it, disrupting his moves. This gave Ralph time to respond, and the two armies settled into a shooting match.

Caesar's cavalry just sat in front of the Prussians and were cut down.

Slowly Ralph ground Caesar's army down.

Finally the village was isolated, and the defenders subjected to sustained musketry until they broke. Their rout routed the Austrian army.

So, all in all, a fairly standard line up and shoot game, although there were a few tense moments. There were no close combats and neither side used their cavalry.

During the game I got messages confirming that my burlesque lessons for the next eight weeks were not moving to Thursday evenings, so I get to do burlesque and wargaming, rather than have to make the choice (burlesque would have won).

  1. Neat report Kaptain, thank you! Yep, that's pretty much how it went. Well done indeed to Grossherzog Ralph von Hartfeltzug for a decisive victory. The terrain cloth is still hot from the Prussian black powder residue!

How on earth could burlesque (or just about anything) possibly pip wargaming, eh?! You know what they say, tabletop miniatures is better than...

Oh, certainly. It's better than *that* :)

But not better than the cheers of an entertained audience.

  3. I think Russell Crowe has some views about entertaining an audience.

  4. Nice report. I'm looking for a game to play battles which took place during the Seven Years War. Do you think Maurice would be a good choice? Is it fun as a game? Another option would be HotT which is one of my favourite games. What do you think? Cheers, Karl

    1. Maurice is fun. The rules are pretty simple, but because it uses a card mechanism it takes a while to grasp the nuances of how to actually play. Our group has done historical refights with it, and most people have found it works OK; I never found them quite as satisfactory. It's great for pick-up games though.

Bear in mind that for Maurice you need not just the rules, but the card-deck as well (only one deck per game though)

I think it's a better choice than HOTT, unless you plan to develop your own variant using HOTT as the underlying engine (as I did with the South American Wars of Liberation).

    2. Thank you. Can you recommend another set of rules for refighting battles of the Seven Years War?
